“You are lying within your evidence to this court!” exclaimed senior counsel Bernard De Santos as he was cross-examining Brian Samaroo during the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of school girl, Neesa Lalita Gopaul.
The PI is being heard by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
De Santos continued cross-examining Samaroo yesterday. The witness is allegedly the fabricator of the dumbbells that were found on the murder scene.
Yesterday’s proceedings started at approximately 13:00 hours. Defence attorney at-law, Vic Puran, attended the hearing twenty-six minutes later.
After the conclusion of yesterday’s hearing, state prosecutor Pretima Kissoon made an oral submission for the dumbbells to be tendered into evidence so that Samaroo can identify them.
Both the prosecutor and the attorneys came to an agreement that March 17, will be convenient for the continuation of the PI.
Magistrate Beharry then indicated to the court that the hearing will commence on March 17.
Samaroo was instructed to be present on that date. Cross-examination of the witness is scheduled to continue.
Those who already testified in the matter are Lance Corporal Anoudh Bissoon, Jennifer Sumrah, Keisha Douglas, policeman Joel David and Assistant Superintendent Terrance Paul.
The police are alleging that some time during the months of September and October 2010, Jarvis Small and Bibi Gopaul murdered Gopaul’s daughter, Neesa Gopaul. Small, a gym instructor, is Bibi Gopaul’s lover.
Neesa Gopaul went missing on September 23, 2010, and a report was made at the Leonora Police Station by her mother on September 25.
The 16-year-old’s body with the head partly bashed in beyond recognition was found at the Emerald Towers Resort, off the Soesdyke/Linden Highway on October 2. The disfigured corpse was found stuffed in a large suitcase that was dumped into the Madewini Creek.
Certain articles found in the suitcase led to the arrest of the two suspects, and they were later charged with murder.
A length of rope was wrapped onto two dumbbells which were then attached to the suitcase apparently in an effort to submerge the body. The horrendous find was made by a family that had gone to the abandoned resort to swim.
