A broken septic tank caused teachers and students of Black Bush Secondary School to be displaced from the school building and forced to work in nearby masjids and churches while some chose not to attend school.
According to a parent, Naline Inderjeet, the septic tank had been broken for the past couple weeks and the recent heavy rains caused water to enter the tank through the breakage and to overflow.
This caused sewage to flow into the school yard, causing much discomfort to the students and teachers.
According to Inderjeet, the situation intensified over the weekend, even though work was done to seal the break. “It’s smelling bad; sometimes you can’t eat you own food here. When the breeze turn, the smell is too much,” she stated.
“The NDC people keep spraying and spraying but it’s not making a difference”.
According to reports, worms and other creepy crawlies are rampant in the school yard.
The teachers and students at the school are upset about the matter. Some are having vomiting spells.
Irate parents were standing outside the school Monday morning waiting to speak to the media to voice their concerns.
Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, stated during a telephone interview that repairs had been performed on the tank but that some more works should be finished shortly.
He added that the necessary medical supplies have been ordered and should be arriving in Berbice soon.
Health personnel would be sent in to confirm a healthy environment and then the students would occupy the building again.
