A Berbice teacher and an accomplice are expected to be disciplined by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and possibly charged by the police for forgery and fraud.
The authorities uncovered a scam that points to a forged National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results slip, bearing the name of a senior New Amsterdam secondary school, which was apparently used by the teacher to allow a close relative to enter a New Amsterdam secondary school.
Sources have revealed to Kaieteur News that the student, who originally had gained a place at the Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS), was mysteriously ‘awarded’ a place at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS), after the teacher produced the forged NGSA slip.
The teacher did not take the child to admit him or her at NAMS because it would have been revealed on that school’s master list that the child’s name was not on, and this would have aroused suspicion.
The teacher then took the child to another senior secondary school in the region.
That school accepted the slip without knowing it was fraudulent and admitted the child without the knowledge of the Regional Education authorities. That school also did not double check with NAMS, so no red flags were raised.
Questions have arisen whether the school asked for a Letter of Transfer for the child. That letter would have officially indicated that transfer was approved from NAMS to the school where the child was being taken for admission.
Apparently, the forged slip was not difficult to create since the NGSA results usually arrive on large sheets of paper, with a great amount of excess paper that is usually discarded. It was the excess papers that were used in creating the new forged slip.
After the Regional officials were somehow tipped off about the matter, an investigation was conducted with the schools in question and brought the matter to light.
Education officials and the police are conducting further investigations.
