Yet another US citizen has been nabbed by Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) ranks, trying to smuggle cocaine out of Guyana via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
According to reports, sometime around 14:00 hours yesterday, the 50 year-old female was nabbed with some five kilogrammes of cocaine. This newspaper was told that the woman was about to board BWIA flight 424, destined for New York, when she was intercepted.
Reports are that the woman was seen acting in a suspicious manner as her luggage was being searched by CANU officials. A thorough check of the woman’s suitcase revealed that there was a false compartment.
Further checks unearthed a white powdery substance in the form of caked bricks. The substance later tested positive for cocaine.
The woman was told of the offence and has since been brought to the city to facilitate further investigation. Charges are likely to be laid shortly.
Only a few days ago another female American citizen Maxine Cecelia Batts, 65, was nabbed on her way to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport with some nine kilogrammes of cocaine hidden in her wheelchair.
She has since been charged and sentenced to four years imprisonment.
