Kwame Benn, a Lance Corporal attached to the Grove Police Station, was yesterday brought before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court after he was arrested by his colleagues for the allegation of collecting an inducement (bribe).
The court was told by police prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey, that on February 11, at Grove Police Station, East Bank Demerara, the lawman collected the sum of $5,000 as an inducement or reward forgoing to prosecute June Marcus and Junior Thomas in relation to their principal affairs.
Harvey furthermore added that on the day of the incident, Benn was carrying out traffic duties on the Grove Public Road, when the two plaintiffs who were in a Toyota Raum proceeding along the said road were stopped because of a traffic violation they had committed.
The two were then ordered to the station by Benn. At the station, the accused demanded that they hand over some money to go without prosecution for the traffic offence they had committed. The two plaintiffs complied but reported the incident to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Eve Leary. It was for that reason, that the lawman was arrested by his own on February 12, after the said $5,000 was recovered on his person.
The accused Corporal appeared in court yesterday represented by defense counsel Patrice Henry.
He was not required to plead.
The attorney in his bail application told the court that Benn is a serving member of the Guyana Police Force for over 13 years. He also stated that his client is married and resides at lot 942 Grove, East Bank Demerara with his family.
Henry went on to explain that his client has no previous matter before any court and is a father of two.
At that point he applied for bail for the lawman in a reasonable sum.
Harvey made no objection, hence Magistrate Beharry allowed the policeman bail in the sum of $40,000. The matter was made returnable on February 22, at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
