Dear Editor,
As I listen to the news, read the papers and engage in conservation as we gear for regional and national elections later in the year, I am very concerned about the number of eligible voters who have not been registered for one reason or another.
I am following with great intensity the presidential race within the PNCR and while I admire all the presidential hopefuls and have high regards for them due to the fact they are all professionals, qualified and make a formidable team for the elections, there is no doubt that the one that stands out is Mr. Carl Greenidge.
Mr. Greenidge is an individual I have always admired. I feel that he has the potential to do great things for our country. It is without doubt that Mr. Greenidge having served as Finance Minister under the administration of Linden Forbes Burnham and Desmond Hoyte, has tremendous knowledge of our economy and has been involved in a number of negotiations and bilateral agreements that have been beneficial to our economy over the years, both under the PNC and PPP/C governments.
Mr. Greenidge led the way for the Economic Recovery Programme and negotiated numerous projects and programmes which the current administration was able to run with after taking office in 1992. He has worked for our country with several international organisations and has made meaningful representation for our country although not being a part of the current government.
It is therefore important that as we go to elect a presidential candidate for our party we should be mindful of this individual who has the knowledge and skills both politically and economically and is a qualified negotiator – skills that are needed at this juncture in our country.
Come February 26 when members of the PNCR get the golden opportunity to elect their presidential candidate, they should not be carried away by rhetoric. They should not be influenced by the fact that because they can run in and out of some people offices and receive financial rewards or because that person has been in the party for a number of years.
What is needed is for persons to think seriously and make the right decision and not decisions that are based on emotions or sentiments, since they are well aware that the main objective is to
remove this inept and corrupt regime from the seat of government.
The only formidable opponent that can lead the PNCR and remove them from office is Mr. Carl Greenidge.
It is no surprise that the average man in the street, some who are merely supporters are urging members who will vote come 26 February to elect Carl Greenidge. I read with some sense of optimism that Mr. Henry Jeffery endorsed Mr. Carl Greenidge as the most suitably qualified candidate.
May I say it would be a sad day if this learned politician is not elected. I know that any mistake will surely come back to haunt the PNCR.
