An 11-year-old girl perished at around 14:30 hrs yesterday while swimming in the Port Kaituma River.
The victim has been identified as Reha Mingo, and reports state that she was swimming in an area called “Canal Bank, located near the entrance of the river where the steamer usually passes.
Kaieteur News understands that this area is a local recreational spot for children and young adults.
Contacted by telephone yesterday, the girl’s father, told Kaieteur News that he was not in the area when the incident took place.
Mingo explained that he was in the interior and was returning home around 03:00 pm when he saw his niece running towards his vehicle. Immediately he knew something was amiss.
The niece then notified him of his daughter’s death.
He disclosed that his wife was at home when the tragedy occurred. However, the man stated that while he was unaware of the details of the incident, his wife was in the area when their daughter drowned.
The girl’s mother was too distraught to speak.
The police have taken statements from both parents and are currently investigating the matter.
