Seven persons, including a single mother and her three children, are now homeless after a fire destroyed their Sophia, Georgetown home.
Seema Singh, a single mother, lived in the house with her three children and her parents.
The fire started just after 18:00 hrs at the house at 575 10th Field, Sophia Squatting area. The woman said that she was downstairs when she realised that there was a fire coming from her sick mother’s bedroom.
The mother, Gaitree Doodnauth, occupied the bedroom located at the back of the house. She was known to light anything in her room.
Singh said that she could not figure out how the fire started. She said that she lived at the house since 1993. She has three children: Yashoda Persaud, 9; Sophia Singh, 4; and Rohit Geer, 2.
Singh said she would do “domestic work” to make ends meet. Her father and mother do not work.
Neighbours said that the Guyana Fire Service responded quickly to the scene, but was unable to save the house.
