In a show of admirable commitment, Guyana Rugby Football Union appointed Technical Director of the national Sevens team Canadian Spencer Robinson turned up at the National Park yesterday morning shortly after arriving, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Robinson, who was delayed for a number of days due to the snowstorm that has blanketed North America, started work with the team immediately cognizant of the need to get in most of the tactical and defensive aspects to complete their preparations before departure on February 8 to participate in the IRB Sevens World Series scheduled to be staged from February 12-13 in Las Vegas, USA.
Quizzed on the team’s preparedness during the short time that he had seen them, Robinson said that the guys look reasonably fit and impressed him on his first day with them.
He told this newspaper that the session yesterday focused mainly on defence and getting all the players on the same page.
“We will change the focus as we progress, but remember I’m here just this morning (yesterday) and it is all about getting the players to synchronize with each other. I have to apply some standards, but right now we are going to be working on defence about 60% of the way,” the TD disclosed.
He insisted that he was impressed with what he saw and will be working to have the players playing as a team.
Guyana is grouped with England, France and Argentina and plays its first game against Series leaders England.
