Yesterday the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) observed yet another milestone, this time it was the 44th year of existence of the Women’s Army Corps.
The celebration commenced with a thanksgiving service which was presided over by Elder Ruth Lee, at the Auditorium of Base Camp Ayanganna.
Apart from the women’s corps, those attending included their male counterparts, GDF veterans and representatives from other disciplined services.
The sermon yesterday focused on the two female bible characters Queens Esther and Vashti.
The elder highlighted and compared the two personalities and urged the females who were present to inculcate the values of Esther whose strongest qualities were humility and submissiveness to God’s will.
Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best, in an anniversary message which was read by Midshipman Shenel Europe, lauded the work of the women, who form a significant percentage of the force and have significantly contributed to every area of its development.
Meanwhile, a seminar examining an array of issues pertaining to the development of women, as well as a debating competition, will be among the activities to mark this year’s anniversary.
Additionally, members of the Corps will host a feeding programme at the Ruimveldt Children’s Home.
A cocktail reception is scheduled to be held, during which a number of female veterans will be honoured.
