As BCB honours 2010 Inter County players
At an appreciation luncheon hosted by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) held last Saturday at the Annex Restaurant in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice to honor all its Inter-County players who represented the County will flying colors last year, Royston Crandon was named the Most Valuable Player among the senior players.
The Board’s Under-15, 17, 19, 23, Female and Senior teams were all recognised for their excellent performances on and off the field of play and for maintaining the Ancient County’s reputation as the number one in Guyana. Crandon received a gift of one bicycle for being named MVP.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee (SEC) Hilbert Foster in addressing the honorees praised them for their discipline, commitment and performances during the year while stating that their efforts enabled Berbice to dominate the game. Foster reminded the gathering that the majority of players donning national colors are Berbicians.
He affirmed that the Berbice Cricket Board was pleased with the state of the game in the County but would strive to work harder to take it even higher. He challenged the players to do even better in 2011 and encouraged them to be more passionate, discipline and committed to enable them to maintain dominance at all levels.
President Keith Foster said he was elated that the Board’s massive investment in player’s development on and off the field reaped great rewards in 2010.
He however cautioned that in 2010 is the past and greater efforts must be made in the 2011 to allow Berbice to successfully defend every title and regain those which the County lost. President of the Guyana Cricket Board Chetram Singh in a rousing and well received featured address congratulated the Berbice Board for a job well done and expressed the hope that others would follow their example.
He stated that Berbice was the best organised County and over the years has shown that they will always succeed because they put cricket and cricketers first. Mr. Singh had special praise for the Board’s introduction of an Under-13 competition since the spotting of talent has to be done early to be developed properly.
He spoke on the distraction youths faced on a daily basis among them are the Nintendo games, television and the internet.
Speaking directly to the cricketers, the outgoing Guyana Cricket Board boss advised them that success was only achieved by hard work, commitment and discipline. Singh also urged the Berbice Board to review its First Division teams as it was his personal opinion that there are too many teams involved.
Meanwhile, former BCB Secretary Mortimer George during the function launched a book on the history of Berbice cricket – ‘A Time in our History’ – detailing the history of Berbice cricket from the formation of the Berbice Cricket Board in 1939 to 2010.
George in a brief overview of the book said that Berbice cricket has a fine and rich history and it was his hope that the young players present would make a special effort to read it.
