Dear Editor
I read in your newspaper that the President went to India to get a soft loan for building a Specialty Hospital. If one wants a loan doesn’t one need to have collateral to secure the loan? What is the collateral that the President is offering?
A few weeks ago, the President commented that outsiders have an interest in our elections.
This is ironic since the President is the one going abroad and asking countries to build infrastructures (Skeldon Factory, New Amsterdam Hospital).
Over the years, Government officials have spent billions of dollars globetrotting for aid and alms. These tax dollars could have been spent in Guyana for many projects. Using our own money would have made us more appreciative of our achievements and pay attention to the quality of our projects.
Furthermore, we do not need to borrow money. Money is available – this is evident by the lavish homes being built by people in high places.
Why the rush in building a Specialty Hospital? Billions of dollars were spent on renovating and building specialized departments at the Georgetown Hospital. More money was spent on recruiting specialists or training them to run these departments.
This investment has paid dividend. Georgetown Public Hospital has services that are comparable to institutions in the Caribbean.
This is quiet an accomplishment when we think back of years ago when the hospital lacked professionals to care for the sick.
The Government has been saying that there is a shortage of specialists yet it wants to go ahead and build a specialty hospital. This is counterproductive since it would mean that some specialists from GPHC will be working at the new hospital.
With a shortage of specialists at GPHC, certain treatments may be lacking hence making GPHC another white elephant.
