Loris Nathoo turned in a magnificent performance to amass 6 points and clinch the Trophy Stall Chess Tournament when play concluded at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Camp and Hadfield Street Sunday evening last.
Indeed it was a keen tussle for championship honours after Wendell Meusa finished a mere ½ point behind Nathoo after the two players had battled neck to neck up to round five.
It was here that Nathoo edged forward after Muesa suffered a loss to Alexander Duncan to set him back a mite.
Nathoo had suffered earlier setbacks after conceding draws to former national champion, Meusa and President of the Federation, Errol Tiwari.
He finished on six points from seven games. Muesa finished on 5 ½ points while Errol Tiwari closed off on 4 ½ points.
The other points standing are; Alexander Duncan, Shiv Nandalall and Chino Chung (4 points apiece), David Khan and Pierre Boucher (3 ½ points each), Glenford Corlette and Rodwell Poole (3 points apiece) while Haatram Parbat finished in the cellar in 1 point.
In play in the junior category, Rashad Hussain and Anthony Drayton both finished on 6 ½ points each but the former player earned the top spot after the tiebreaker system was employed.
The other points standing reads Saeed Ali (6), Khalid Gajraj and Raan Motilall (5 ½), Suhai Feng and Joshua Pedro (5 each), Davion Mars and Shane Yussuf (4 ½ each), Vaughn Moses, Roberto Neto and Avinash Kishun (4 apiece), Shane Rampertab (3 ½) Three other players were tied in the cellar on 3 points apiece. Shane Yussuf was adjudged the Most Improved Player of the tournaments.
Meanwhile, at the presentation ceremony President of the Guyana Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari expressed gratitude to proprietor of the Trophy Stall, Mr. Ramesh Sunich for sponsoring the championships. Director of Sports, Mr. Neil Kumar was also on hand to present the prizes to the winners.
He applauded the GCF and Mr. Sunich for promoting the sport and urged the ruling body to continue the good work.
He also reminded the junior players of the imminent Inter-Guiana Games scheduled for Suriname later in the year and urged them to be prepared for the challenge.
