Dear Editor,
Many of our children in Guyana are either malnourished or obese. Being malnourished, their mental, and physical development are progressing slowly. These setbacks make it difficult for the children to conceptualize.
Such a child would have difficulty in using a laptop. Obese children are obese because they eat a lot of junk foods high in calories and lack physical activities. One of the contributors to obesity is children being indoors, watching TV or playing electronic games. Giving them a laptop will aggravate the situation.
Children need to have proper nutrition and participate in physical activities. These agenda can only be achieved in a structured environment. Many years ago, there were community centres in the villages. These centres had sport activities and a library.
By renovating these centres, having programmes which provide a nutritious meal and physical activities, setting up a library, putting in a internet cafe and make it accessible to the children, will ensure that our children have a healthy lifestyle.
Studies have shown that prolonged use of laptop can be detrimental to our health. The problems that can be manifested are male sterility, hearing and vision loss. These laptops generate a lot of heat. Most home in Guyana do not have central air and as such there is a possibility that these laptops can explode. Another problem is that the power fluctuates. This deviation will damage the laptop.
I am suggesting that the money spent on laptops should be used on building or renovating community centres.
Unused money can be spent in providing commodities to poverty stricken families. Such initiative will definitely show that the Government cares for the welfare of the people rather than selfish gains.
