– cops to charge accused with four offences today
The driver who fled across the Demerara Harbour Bridge on Friday night after hitting down a motorcyclist was under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Traffic officials told Kaieteur News that a breathalyzer test revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.
An official said that he is to be charged today with driving under the influence, dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and breach of traffic light signal.
Eyewitnesses recalled seeing the driver’s grey Starlet, PHH 1328, heading south at a fast rate on the East Bank Demerara Public Road at around 20:30 hrs last Friday.
One eyewitness said that the driver ‘clipped’ a taxi and another car in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
He said that the driver then suddenly swerved to the right and slammed into a motorcyclist, identified as Carlton Fraser, who had just come over the Harbour Bridge.
The eyewitness said that instead of stopping, the culprit drove past the toll booth on the eastern section of the bridge and headed to the other side.
However, police were alerted and managed to apprehend him.
He is being detained at the Providence Police Station, while his vehicle was impounded.
Fraser, who miraculously escaped with minor injuries, was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
