Last week saw the closure of an eight-week tenure for a group of four final year social work University of Guyana (UG) students who were tasked with “making a difference” for persons who have been severely affected due to unfortunate circumstances.
The group which comprised Eulita Browne, Samantha Athery-Ward, Alverine Bacchus and Michael Gilgeous spent their two-month stint working along with Esther Braithwaite (a cleaner at the East Ruimveldt Multilateral School), a mother of three, who resides at Lot 663 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
According to Eulita Browne, Ms. Braithwaite’s house was destroyed by fire in September last, and the group had heard of her situation through a mutual friend.
She explained that upon meeting Braithwaite, who was more than pleased for any form of assistance, she readily accepted the group’s company and intervention and through the new friendship formed, she was able to develop herself by being enrolled at computer classes at the Mark Benschop Foundation.
With the help of the UG students, Braithwaite also was able to “link” with the Human Services Ministry where she was registered and promised $10,000 assistance. The final-year students often did pep-talks and other activities while they visited Braithwaite every Saturday for the past eight weeks.
When Kaieteur News arrived recently at Esther Braithwaite’s residence the UG students had prepared a hamper for her and also as a surprise, the woman’s sister, who would be at the house whenever the group visited, was also presented with a hamper.
Ms. Braithwaite stated that after the fire had destroyed her home she had received a monetary voucher from Survival Supermarket and assistance from the Guyana Relief Council.
