Ryan Couchman, 32, of 1360 18th Street Diamond, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
Defence counsel Patrice Henry made an appearance for the accused, who entered a not guilty plea.
It is alleged that on January 20, last, at VN Gualodice Incorporated, Zinnia Avenue, Bel Air, Georgetown, Couchman and four of his associates armed themselves with guns while posing as customers and robbed Vico Cohen, Samuel Lima and Christopher Mc Adam of a quantity of articles, valued in excess of $4.9 million.
According to police prosecutor Lionel Harvey, on the day in question, Couchman and four other men swooped down at the business place of Cohen, who is a diamond dealer, and informed the security guard, McAdam, that they were interested in marketing a quantity of diamonds.
As a result the guard allowed them into the premises. While in the house, Couchman handed over several pieces of objects that he claimed were diamonds. As Cohen proceeded to inspect the objects, Couchman pointed a gun to his victim’s head and demanded that he “hand over everything”.
It was reported that a laptop bag worth $10,000 and one laptop worth $200,000 were taken away from Cohen by the gang.
The police are also claiming that on the same day at VN Gualodice Inc., the gang robbed Samuel Lima of a satellite phone valued $400,000, one laptop valued at $140,000, a cell phone worth $120,000 and four million dollars in Guyana currency.
While at the diamond dealer’s premises, the gang also took three cellular phones and $27,000 in cash from Christopher Mc Adam, who was the security guard on duty at the time of the incident. Attorney at-law Patrice Henry in his bail application mentioned that his client is a father of one and is a gold miner.
Henry added that on Saturday, last, his client was arrested for an alleged murder and it was only Monday that the police decided to implicate Couchman in the armed robbery.
Based on reports, the accused was arrested and pointed out by the victims during an identification parade.
Bail was refused and Couchman will make his next court appearance on February 11.
