Dear Editor,
Trinidad and Tobago hosted the 1984 Fifa 10th Concacaf youth football championship from August 19 to September 7. Guyana was placed in Group 3 alongside host Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and the Netherlands Antilles and the venue hosting matches in this group was the National Stadium.
Group one consisted of Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic and El Salvador the host venue was Arima. Group two had the likes of the United States, Barbados, Bermuda Honduras and Suriname, Shaw Park in Tobago hosted matches in this group while group four had 7 times champs Mexico, Costa Rica, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.
Skinner Park was the venue for matches in Guyana’s quest for honours, which started with an emphatic 2-1 triumph over host Trinidad and Tobago. The Paul Ferrell Ford led side then humbled the Netherlands Antilles by the same margin 2-1. Although Guyana lost the final preliminary round match 2-1 to Panama, the land of the Majestic Kaieteur Falls still topped group three with 4 points.
After heading group three, Guyana qualified for the Second Round and was surprisingly placed in group (B) alongside power houses Mexico, Canada and Honduras.
Guyana lost 2 nil to Mexico the Championship winners, 2 nil to Canada the tournament runner ups and 1 nil to Honduras. In all three matches Coach Clive Wilson’s charges fought to the end against opponents that were far more experienced, trained and exposed at the International Youth Level.
Strange enough the goal that buried the Guyanese against Canada was scored by a son of the soil, Plaisance born and bred Alex Bunbury, who was one of the tournament outstanding players.
In the finals Mexico defeated Canada by 2 goals to one to lift the title for the eight time. The outstanding players for Guyana were Captain Paul Ferrell Ford, the late Godfrey Gibbons, Shawn (Putty) Williams, Aubrey and Oswald Taylor, custodian Richard (lion in the cage) Alphonso.
27 years later, Head Coach Hercules is on a mission to continue the climb coach Wilson’s men started in search of International Youth Football’s Mount Everest. This time around the man calling plays is a general in Rank where Guyana’s Football is concerned with 14 Senior International goals and the only Helmet-trick for Guyana at the International Senior Level.
He also played an integral role when Guyana’s Youth led by Dirk Exeter humbled Suriname at the Andre Kamperveen stadium in Suriname and captured the Inter Guiana games football title for the first time in Paramaribo in 1993. And with trusted Lieutenants like Telson McKinnon, Colin Nelson, Ryan Crandon, Tryon Bobb, Eon Alleyne and Richie Richards in goal, the mission should be accomplished.
