Digicel has denied that it has ever received any form of tax holidays in Guyana. The mobile giant, one of the two authorised companies in Guyana for cellular services, yesterday made the assertions in response to an article published in the Saturday’s edition of Kaieteur News.
Under an article headlined “2011 Budget will be a burden to future generations-says
Corbin”, Digicel said it disagreed with some of the statements made.
The article in addressing the matter of Corporation Tax for telecoms companies in Guyana stated “… There has been no lowering of the Corporation Tax levied against the telecommunications companies. At the same time, Digicel is enjoying a tax holiday”. Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean, denied that his company was benefiting from such an arrangement.
“I wish to state categorically that Digicel does not enjoy any form of a “tax holiday” in Guyana as stated. Indeed, Digicel is not (and never has been) the recipient of any preferential treatment in relation to the collection and payment of Corporation taxes in Guyana from either the GRA or the Government of Guyana. The statement as published is simply incorrect and requires prompt clarification.”
According to Dean, Digicel is fully tax compliant and has met, and continues to meet, all of its taxation obligations as is normal and in accordance with the Laws of Guyana.
