A combination of long existing family feuds and dispute over personal properties led to the demise of 32-year old Shane Rodney, of Lot 68 Section A Sophia. The father of five was stabbed to death in his compound, allegedly by his neighbour who is identified as Roger Pilgrim.
The man was stabbed twice, once in the neck and in the left side ribs.
According to reports, the argument stemmed from Rodney’s accusation against one of his neighbours. The deceased apparently accused 13-year-old Sherwin Roberts of stealing a tyre. Relatives of the deceased said that Pilgrim, a relative of Roberts, went into the yard arguing in representation of Roberts.
One of Rodney’s relatives said that he was in the house when the argument began but as soon as he heard the commotion, he went into the yard in an effort to “calm down the situation”. The man said that when he went into the yard, he did not notice any weapon in the possession of the accused.
According to him, it was not until Pilgrim had jumped the fence that he noticed him pulling out “a long black handle knife from his waist”.
He said that after Pilgrim stabbed Rodney, he went back into the yard with the intention of returning with a cutlass. The man said that Pilgrim’s mother tried talking him out of “finishing he off”.
He then threw the knife into the nearby bushes and immediately fled the scene. Subsequently, police recovered the weapon and took the body to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The deceased whose youngest child is seven months old, is said to have been a hard working multi-talented individual. He was said to be a farmer, mason and a carpenter.
Vandetta Carter, the dead man’s reputed wife, told this publication that over the five years that she has lived with Rodney she was very happy because “he was a loving man and never use to hold malice”.
The woman added that from time to time, her husband and the neighbours would have altercations but none has never gone as far as this time. With tears streaming down her face, the woman said that her husband was supposed to have started the finishing works on another house they were building. “He can’t do that now cause them take he life”.
Other relatives of the deceased described him as a peaceful and jovial man. “We lost a lot by losing him; he was the strength of the family”.
