Guyanese like to talk about “running from the jumbie and butting up with the coffin.” That was the plight of a gun-toting bag snatcher who robbed a fish vendor in broad daylight yesterday.
It all happened around 11:20 hrs when the vendor, 58-year-old Irene Arjune, of Good Hope, Mahaica, visited a city bank and withdrew $515,000.
Police said that Arjune was about to enter a car when the thief held her up at gunpoint and grabbed her handbag, which contained the cash, two plane tickets valued at $160,000 and some documents.
The thief then sprinted along Robb Street and into King Street, where he ran straight into a police patrol.
On seeing the lawmen, the thief made a quick about-turn, ran back to Irene Arjune, and gave the already stunned woman back the stolen bag.
He again tried to escape, but was confronted by the same police patrol, which arrested him.
A search was carried out on the confused robber and a .32 Walther pistol and six rounds was found in his possession. Police said that subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the man who allegedly gave the suspect the firearm. They are both in police custody and charges will be made shortly.
