Police have detained four suspects in connection with the murder of 59-year-old US citizen Roopnarine Ramodit, who was shot dead on Wednesday night just hours after returning for a one-week vacation with his wife.
Kaieteur News understands that questions are being raised about the fact that Ramodit’s killers made off with just a gold chain after shooting him in the abdomen.
According to Commander of ‘B’ Division Steven Merai, the police are awaiting the results of the post mortem which will be carried out today. He said that they are working with every possible lead in the case and are still trying to put the pieces together.
Ramodit was fatally shot, allegedly by one of two men who had cornered him in the bottom flat of a two-storey house at Chuk Street, Clifton Settlement, Tain, Corentyne, Berbice. The killers reportedly fled with the victim’s gold chain.
Ramodit and his wife, Loopwattie, lived in Minnesota, USA, and arrived in Guyana on Wednesday.
It was the first time in ten years that Ramodit was returning home. His wife had not returned to the country in 18 years.
A police press release stated that Ramodit and others were sitting on a bench in the yard, when two masked men entered and held them at gunpoint.
One of the bandits then took away a gold chain from Ramodit and shot him.
A tearful Loopwattie Ramodit related that her husband had just showered and was having dinner outside.
She was heating up food in the kitchen when one of the gunmen entered the kitchen. He then told her to, “be quiet or I gon kill all alyuh”.
She then heard a shot outside, after which both men fled the scene. It was then she discovered that her husband had been shot.
The other family members were upstairs at the time during the five-minute ordeal.
Ramodit succumbed as neighbours were attempting to rush him to the Port Mourant Hospital.
When Kaieteur News visited the area Wednesday evening, a tearful and distraught Loopwattie Ramodit related that two gunmen ran into the yard at about 7:30pm.
“Them shoulda bruk he foot and leff am. Them na shoulda kill he like da,” Loopwattie said while breaking down .
She stated that her husband was very reluctant to come back to Guyana but she forced him to come. They had originally planned to visit another state in the US.
She described her husband as a very religious man.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ramodit said yesterday that the police, along with Commander Merai visited the home Thursday and took statements. She stated that the police took her husband’s passport. The woman said that she needs to present the document upon re-entry to the US.
