When the witness tampering case against Chandra Narine Sharma was called again yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond, the defendant’s lawyer, Nigel Hughes, tendered a letter to inform the court that his client was granted permission by the High Court to leave the jurisdiction.
The letter which was tendered by Hughes stated that Sharma will have to travel overseas urgently, so as to receive a cardiac pacemaker implant and will be admitted to the hospital for a period of two to three weeks.
Taking this into consideration, the Magistrate adjourned the case until February 18, when the court will be updated on his medical condition.
The embattled television owner was absent during yesterday’s proceedings.
Sharma’s five associates, Ravi Mangar, Tyrone Ali, Mark Reid, Raywattie Ramsaywack and Doodnauth, who were also charged with witness tampering, were present for their case hearing. But as a result of a prosecution witness not showing up, their matter was also adjourned. It is now fixed for February 1, when prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin will continue his cross examination.
The five accused were represented by attorney at-law Mark Waldron. .
Sharma and the five other accused were all charged with obstruction of justice on April 23 last.
That charge arose from a previous allegation of carnal knowledge of a girl under 12 which Sharma was facing.
