Following the fallout from his appointment as Chairman to the recently established Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), head of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr. Steve Surujbally, has warned staffers not to be distracted, as the country gets ready for general elections later this year.
The official made the call on Friday at the Georgetown Club as he challenged senior managers of the GECOM Secretariat, and the Registration Officers attached to the 23 nationwide Registration Offices to be focused.
According to the Chairman, workers must demonstrate unswerving efficiency with respect to the conduct of General and Regional Elections scheduled later this year. This forum was a one-day meeting of the managers.
Referring to the criticisms which forced Government to rescind his appointment to GLDA, Dr Surujbally, according to a GECOM release, said that recent publications in the media carry the potential to undermine his integrity and, by extension, that of the Commission and Secretariat.
Surujbally also emphasized the need for GECOM Staff not to get distracted from dedicating their best efforts towards the national task of conducting the upcoming elections in accordance with international best practices.
The official also called on GECOM staff to reflect on “the successful manner in which the 2006 elections were conducted” and the possible challenges that may be encountered.
According to GECOM yesterday, the primary objective of the meeting was to focus attention on follow up activities associated with the recently concluded Cycle of Continuous Registration.
Included in the matters raised were detailed reports on the recently concluded Cycle of Continuous Registration, review of preparation for the upcoming Claims and Objections period with considerations for the identification of these temporary offices.
The recruitment and training of temporary staff to work during the exercise and how to deal with suspected cases of multiple registrations and unresolved transactions-including persons whose addresses could not be verified.
Included in Friday’s meeting were Gocool Boodoo, Chief Election Officer; Calvin Benn, Deputy Chief Election Officer; Keith Lowenfield, Assistant Chief Election Officer; Beverley Critchlow, Voter Registration Manager; Colin April, Logistics Manager, and Indira Anandjit, Human Resources Manager.
