Almost two weeks after the Ministry of Public Works demolished stalls at Stabroek Market, there has been a significant decrease in criminal activity in the area, compared to when there was the congestion of stalls and less order. This is according to an official from the City Constabulary.
“I haven’t received a call in a long while since the stalls were removed, you’re not hearing about anymore small crimes and illegal activities in the area yet,” the official noted.
When this newspaper solicited comments from persons about their perspectives on the clearing of the Stabroek Market, many were well aware of the fact that there seems to be much more order and discipline, and less crime.
It was also noted by some citizens that the market should always have a police mobile patrol present and the Government should invest in beautifying the area since it can highlight tourism.
“You know how much people does get rob at gunpoint through the market all hours of the day? This place was a haven for criminals, is a good thing a police patrol deh hey now,” one man stated emphatically.
Vendors around the market were optimistic about the decrease in illegal activities and the sense of order that now prevails.
However, others were displeased about the fact that many vendors had been paying thousands in tax and vending fees, but were forced to remove and were not reimbursed or given a proper place to vend.
