An itinerant vendor was battling for his life last night after two gun-toting bandits shot him in the stomach outside the abandoned Piggott’s Drug Store located at the Regent and Bourda Street junction.
Eyewitnesses said that Sanjay Persaud, 40, of Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara, was attacked by two gun-toting young men around 20:00 hrs while hanging out in the area with four other itinerant vendors.
The robbers relieved the wounded man of two gold bands and a gold chain before fleeing.
The victim was still undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Hospital Public Hospital at press time.
People said that one of the four other vendors with whom he was drinking, said that they had been drinking earlier in the night and were hanging out in Regent Street when a man came up to them.
He said that the man asked if they had any lighters to sell and he jokingly replied that they only had “bombs and guns” to sell.
The vendor said that the man left the scene but came back shortly after in the company of another man. Both men were carrying handguns. Stefan Phillips, another member of the group, said that the men discharged two rounds in the air. Phillips said that he managed to grab one of the men, who shot in the air again.
One of the men then shot Persaud in the stomach.
He said that the robbers then stripped the wounded man of his chain and two bands before fleeing. The victims alleged that another vendor who was with them removed a gold ring from one of Persaud’s fingers, but later denied doing so.
He was subsequently detained.
Police later scoured the scene for evidence.
