… UN Int’l Year For People of African Descent
In a release from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, it was confirmed that in keeping with its obligation as a Member State of the United Nations (UN), Guyana is set to launch its year-long national programme of activities for the International Year for People of African Descent.
The Opening Ceremony, under the theme “People of African Descent – Recognition, Justice and Development”, is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday (19th January, 2011) at the International Convention Centre, Lilliendaal, beginning at 17:00hrs (5:00 pm).
The release stated that consequent upon widespread and sustained consultations with known Afro-Guyanese organisations, a Draft Official Programme has been fashioned and is scheduled for year-long implementation, after final confirmation.
The International Convention Centre, it was noted, represents a change of venue from Georgetown’s National Cultural Centre.
The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport has issued invitations for the event at which representatives from the United Nations, the Government, the Parliamentary Opposition, the Diplomatic Corps, numerous African-oriented Organisations and the general public are expected to be present.
A brief cultural programme is also planned.
