Two young women from the border community of Lethem are on their way to the city to face charges of embezzlement of more than $10M from their employer.
The two women who are employed at a Guyoil fuel outlet operated by David Coates are accused of embezzling the cash between December 1 last year and January 17, 2011.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the women has admitted stealing about $1M and had implicated the other woman when she was interrogated by investigators. She has reportedly offered to repay a part of the stolen cash.
A source in the Lethem area disclosed that the owners of the establishment had suspected one of the women of stealing cash and ‘making up the books’.
Their suspicions were aroused after she recently built a brand new house and bought a new car.
The fraud was uncovered after the proprietors audited the books and found discrepancies to the tune of more than $10M.
A total of $7.5M is missing from the Guyoil outlet, while another $5M cannot be accounted for at the Digicel facility, which is also run by the proprietors of the fuel station.
Kaieteur News understands that the women are expected to be passed through the court today.
