As Guyana’s Under-20 football team prepares for its immediate football engagements in Suriname, the national governing body seized the opportunity to prepare the young ballweavers more holistically for their important tasks, both on and off the field.
With practice sessions and other similar assignments moving apace, the players and their management moved indoors for a specially arranged sensitisation Seminar aimed at enlightening them to topical social issues related to HIV/AIDS within the communities and country they represent.
The one-day exercise was held on Thursday last at the Watooka House in Linden (where the team was encamped). The seminar was coordinated by the new Guyana Beach Football Association (GBFA) in tandem with the Professional Youth Alliance (PYA), and conducted under the auspices of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).
In a practical example of the power of football being used as a tool to actively enhance life styles and life skills development, the team management and players were exposed to topics on HIV/AIDS related to the spread and prevention of HIV/AIDS, discouraging stigmatization, and the promotion of healthy life styles for persons with and without the disease. This was an effort, on the part of the organizations involved, to create greater awareness among the young players so that they may become more proactive in the broader national thrust to fight the scourge of HIV/AIDS in Guyana. Resource persons for the sessions were drawn mainly from the PYA which boasts of effectively using such undertakings to promote youth development and empowerment through relevant and creative training opportunities.
Through this seminar and others the GFF and GBFA are committed to developing well-rounded players, ready for responsibility, and who will serve Guyana with distinction at every level. Future programmes are planned for young players in areas such as self-mentoring, capacity building, community development, public speaking and international relations.
