Sanctioning on the activities surrounding the demolition of stalls on the Stabroek Market Tarmac, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) in a release yesterday stated that it supports the authorities in restoring the Stabroek Market Square, “as one of our historical sites, we agree with the regularising and upgrading of the location. We hope that the image is maintained and that an atmosphere conducive for commerce and one that attracts local as well as foreign visitors is fashioned.”
Nevertheless, the Private Sector Commission said it considers and sympathises with those dislocated vendors.
Members of the PSC recently met with the vendors to hear from them their thoughts about the situation and to determine ways in which they can assist.
“We believe that the persons we met are hopeful of being relocated and will cooperate with the authorities.”
According to the PSC, it was recognised that other business people, namely taxi drivers and minibus operators are affected and the Commission hopes that their problems are also rectified in a timely manner. “There is an urgent need to restore order and to ensure that vendors as well as taxi and minibus operators are able to conduct their affairs in an organised way. We need to think Georgetown First.”
The PSC said it stands ready to assist or consult with any and all stakeholders in any way possible.
