Dear Editor,
It is with a deep sense of frustration that I put together this response to Mr. Rohit Parmanand or whomever is behind this figure that is seemingly bent on demeaning the team of managers who are currently working to ensure the sugar industry emerges in 2011 from its slump over the past few years.
From the onset it is clear that the opportunist and selective bits of information articulated by ‘Parmanand’ to achieve his sinister objective is not just the direct result of an egotistical and vain disposition but also the end result of one in an influential position and dare I say labour related in the industry.
No amount of whitewash can cover up the fact that this individual obviously has an axe to grind, thus this skillful bit of maneuvering should be seen for what it really is and nothing more – a disgraceful attempt to use ones position and influence to cowardly attack colleagues.
It is clear that this ‘expert’ has a wealth of information about the industry and clearly from his writing apparently has all the solutions to its many problems. The question now has to be asked where was this expert all along and why has he been refusing to contribute but rather attack those who are making the sacrifice and seek to give their all to revive the industry?
This expert apparently has a personal vendetta against the appointment of the DCE for he has over time attacked him for everything under the sun, while occasionally focusing his attention on other officials and board members; yet the writer himself is clearly lacking in the understanding of how management operates.
This flawed reasoning is blatantly obvious when he seeks to quote ‘Christopher Ram’ to make the case that one should not be employed or contribute in one way or another to the industry if one does not have a background in the sugar industry. One wonders what background individuals such as the CEO of GT&T, CEO of IPED and even Mr. Ram himself (just to name a few) had when they were called into service of the industry.
He then states that GuySuCo is probably the only company in the world where leadership is not synonymous with sound educational background. This is not a defense of the GuySuCo management team as they need no defending. It is clear that everyone is quite capable and qualified in his respective areas of responsibility.
But just to inform this conceited individual that he should study the biography of one of the most successful managers in this nation – Chairman of DDL and former Vice-Chairman of GuySuCo, Dr. Yesu Persaud who first started working in the cane fields.
The writer would also do well to follow the careers of CEO of the Apple Co. Mr. Steve Jobs and Microsoft founder Mr. Bill Gates who dropped out of college and high school respectively before making incorrect statements with an international comportment in seeking leverage based only on ones educational background.
I should probably add Ted Turner, Peter Jennings, Thomas Edison, Dave Thomas, Michael Dell and even Albert Einstein to that list.
It is indeed such a mentality molded with a superiority complex which created some of the labour issues in the first instance that the writer laments.
So it is clear that he himself is part of the problem and apparently does not take too kindly to the aggressive approach by other members of the current management team to reach out to workers at all levels in efforts to ensure their concerns are acted upon in a timely manner and they are kept abreast of the challenges and the position of the industry in 2011 to commence the recovery process.
In trying to cast doubt on the amount of canes being carried over from 2010 to the first crop in 2011, this impetuous writer is accusing no less than GAWU’s President of being a liar. Mr. Chand himself had admitted that there were enough canes in the ground to achieve 264,000 tonnes of sugar last year and based on what was actually achieved, one simply has to do the math to get an idea of the amount of canes remaining in the fields.
The target for 2011 is 300,000 tonnes of sugar; the canes are in the ground, harvesting it is now the challenge and workers must now take up that challenge as they stand to earn significantly. To have reached such a position is indeed a remarkable achievement by both the team of managers and workers as this has been made possible despite the dire cash flow problems affecting all aspects of the industry’s operations.
This individual is clearly a ‘Joker Personified’ as he is apparently indicating that GuySuCo should stop planting more canes because of the current labour shortage that effectively means that the industry should die a slow death which apparently is the intention of the writer.
Thank goodness that the current set of managers are constantly focusing their attention on attracting workers into the industry, reducing the number of strikes, increasing their fleet of machinery including bell loaders to maximize production, ramp up the capability of the factories, improve cane yields and burning to grinding intervals among many other areas to improve sugar production and thereby improving the benefits to sugar workers.
Such efforts will not result in overnight results but already the signs are positive and I wish to use this opportunity to encourage workers to come out in their numbers to maintain the survival of their industry and prove the skeptics wrong.
I conclude by wishing the board, management and workers and their unions the very best for 2011 as I am sure that all your hard work will come to fruition; despite the many naysayers who have attacked you throughout your efforts and will continue to do so, even when the industry becomes profitable once again.
