Whenever anyone open dem mouth and dem talk wid a twang people does call dem Yankee. Even if de man come from Canada dem does call he Yankee.
De man who get blow up outside Stabroek Market use to talk wid a twang and people call he American. Dem boys couldn’t understand why American and not Yankee until a man explain that Yankee is a man who get deport while American is a man who does talk like Yankee but he never lef Guyana.
American was a man who use to go by de American Embassy and that is how he get he accent because dem Guyanese use to start talking Yankee as soon as dem come out de embassy wid dem visa.
When people hear he de fuss time he tell dem that he come from overseas. And he was right.
He come from Leguan and he had to cross water to come to town.
But that ain’t de only thing that mek dem boys talk. Dem pass by de market and dem see vendors behave demself fuh de fuss time. Dem calling people sir and dem saying please.
But that is only because dem want back de material fuh build back dem stall. City Hall got de material but some smart constable telling people that dem have to pay a small piece because de mayor house leaking and he got to fix de roof.
Another constable does tell de people how constables got to eat and that fry rice alone not good enough. De money got to buy drink too.
De thing is that dem use to collect from dem same vendors during de Wild West days. De story come out when Robeson bulldoze dem stalls.
And a man deh in hot water because he like li’l gyal below de age of 16. De police looking fuh he.
Talk half. Lef half.
