Dear Editor,
I write in relation to the recent appointment of Dr. Steve Surujbally as Chairperson of the Guyana Livestock Development Autrhority (GLDA). I believe both the Government and Dr. Surujbally have exercised poor judgement in this matter – the Government for offering him the position while he still holds the position of Chair of GEOCOM, and Dr. Surujbally for accepting it.
In my view, it is irrelevant whether this appointment is within the law, or Dr. Surujbally will only spend one hour per month on GLDA’s business. There is a more fundamental problem which transcends legality or how little time will be devoted to GLDA’s matters.
The Chair of GEOCOM should be, as well as, appear to be independent of the Government. This appointment gives the appearance of a conflict of interest, and in the minds of many in Guyana, as far as elections are concerned, perception is reality.
Over the years I have admired Dr. Surujbally’s stand on behalf of GEOCOM in dealing with the Government and the opposition parties. He has demonstrated his independence and a commitment to do his job in a fair and objective manner. As well, unlike his predecessors, he has consistently and effectively communicated with the Guyanese people, keeping them informed and having their support.
At a time when General Elections are due in a matter of months and, as everyone knows elections in the past have been contentious, it is unwise to create unnecessary tension. As a veterinarian, Dr. Surujbally most likely feels he can make a valuable contribution to the GLDA. However, in the greater interest of the country, I hope he gives up this recent appointment.
