The life of three-year-old Omesh Williams initially from Aroaima Berbice River was snuffed out on Wednesday last after he was left unattended on a boat in the Canje River. The child died by drowning.
According to reports, the child’s mother, Sharon Roberts, who hails from the Berbice River and his stepfather, Rampersaud, are employed with a logger, LaFleur, who plies his trade up the Canje River.
The woman who has eight children had decided to seek employment with the same logger since her reputed husband is employed there.
It is understood that Roberts and her family live on the boats, which are moored under the Canje Bridge in the Canje River. According to information received, Omesh and an older brother, Alex Williams, and their mother were on one of the boats around 15:30 hrs.
Alex was left to look over Omesh after the mother left to go and take a bath. After a while Alex was sent on an errand by their stepfather, leaving the three-year-old alone.
After the mother finished bathing, she returned to where the kids were left, but she did not notice Omesh.
Upon enquiring from her husband he also could not give the whereabouts of the kid.
A frantic search was immediately launched for the youth and after a while the child was spotted floating in the river. A resident quickly plunged overboard and retrieved the kid, who was still alive.
Mouth to mouth resuscitation was performed and the child was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were called in and investigations are ongoing. There is talk that the parents could be prosecuted for negligence.
The dead child did not have a birth certificate and most of the other kids do not go to school.
