Forest exports last year earned US$51M, some US$6M ($1.2B) more than 2009. this represented an increase of 13 per cent, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced.
In a year in which Government was aggressively pushing for less log exports and more value-added products, forest produce exports were 170,058 cubic meters over the budgeted amount by 34 per cent.
During his year-end review of the agriculture sector last week, Minister Robert Persaud, whose portfolios include forestry, said that the sector showed strong performance in 2010.
Production volume of logs, lumber, sawn wood and plywood have performed well for the majority of months over the period and has recorded production above the 2009 total of 378,600m3 with a projected 2010 total of approximately 390,000m3.
This represented a three per cent increase over the prevailing level of 2009.
However, there was no plywood production for October to December because of the damage to the boiler at the Barama factory at Land of Canaan.
“…But this has not impacted on the overall total in any notable way as the other forest products satisfactorily covered the gap created,” the Minister said in the report.
Plywood prices showed overall stability with a 1% increase in average price level for 2010 over the 2009 period.
For Guyana’s forest products export, the sawn wood category reflected the largest increase of 10 per cent over the prevailing average price levels at 2009 in both the dressed and undressed sub categories.
Round wood reflected a favourable average price trend with an eight per cent increase recorded over the 2009 level.
A small decline in average price levels were recorded for logs and split wood which saw an eight per cent and an 11 per cent decline in average price level, respectively.
