The year 2011 has just started but the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) have already launched their Charity and Community Development Programme by hosting three activities on New Year’s Day.
The Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17, Pepsi Under-19, Bakewell Second Division, Gizmos and Gadgets Under-23 and First Division along with the Metro Female team hosted the programmes with co-sponsorship from the Universal DVD Club.
The teams visited the Dharam Shala Senior Citizens home in New Amsterdam where they treated the inmates to lunch and donated $50,000 in hygiene kits.
They also donated a bale of clothing worth $100,000 to the Camal Children Home at Chesney along with toys and goodies, while 200 boxed meals were shared out to the less fortunate at the Club’s Area ‘H’ Ground.
Assistant Secretary/CEO Nermala Sewdat at the presentation at the Camal Children Home stated that the teams in 2011 have set themselves a target of 50 projects under their Charity and Community Development work programme.
The aim of the programme, Ms. Sewdat noted is to get the cricketers to understand the importance of serving others mainly the less fortunate and to be role positive models to all. Among planned projects for 2011 are the Children Mash Parade, Tribute to Heroes, donation to the Berbice Cricket Board, donation of educational materials to schools, educational scholarships to less fortunate children and four major community self help projects.
Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster challenged the teams to up hold the high standards they have set themselves in the past and to work harder for more success in 2011. He reminded the cricketers that the RHTY&SC is a household name in Guyana and that success is the only word it believes in. Female captain and West Indies player Shemaine Campbell speaking on behalf of her clubmates promised to fulfill all their commitments to the programme during 2011 and to continue to uphold the club’s high standards on and off the field.
