Police in Essequibo have their hands full investigating two robberies that occurred on Monday.
One of the robberies was committed on a Queenstown housewife, while the other occurred in the Essequibo River, during which a boat captain and a crew-member on a Parika-bound vessel were relieved of their outboard engine and other articles.
In the first report, around 19: 15 hours on Monday, housewife Bibi Zainool and her husband’s 15-year-old niece were attacked and robbed by five men armed with guns.
According to the police the two victims were at home when the men entered through an open door and held them at gunpoint.
The bandits then took away a quantity of jewellery, a laptop computer, a DVD player and $40,000 before escaping.
According to Bibi Zainool both she and her husband’s niece, Ashley were beaten and bound.
Relaying the horrifying incident, Zainool said, both she and Ashley, who hails from the East Coast of Demerara, and was at the time visiting for the holidays, were sitting outside on the front porch, viewing a DVD.
The housewife said “out of the blue” two armed men suddenly pounced on her and the teen. While pointing the guns to their heads, Zainool said the men then ordered them into the house. They then demanded money and jewellery among other valuables.
The housewife said having relieved the family of all their expensive possessions, the bandits’ demanded more.
‘I told one of the bandits, who was ordering Ashley for more items, that she was not an occupant of the home. The bandits then began hitting us with their guns and dragged us into another room.’
Zainool said before the bandits fled, they ransacked the entire house.
Immediately after the ordeal, Zainool said she managed to untie herself and ran over to her neighbour, to whom she related the incident. The neighbor, she said, immediately lodged a complaint at the Anna Regina Police Station.
Two suspects have reportedly been detained.
Recently, Jeweller Udo Gopaul, of Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast, was robbed of raw gold, finished and unfinished products. His losses amounted to millions.
Police have since apprehended and charged three men for that incident. They have already made an appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Meanwhile, at about 20:45hrs on Monday, boat captain Mohamed Afzane, 32, and his crew-member were attacked and robbed by three men, two of whom were armed with guns, in the Essequibo River.
Police said that Afzane and his colleague were travelling in their boat to Parika, when in the vicinity of Palmaria, another boat with the armed men pulled up alongside.
The pirates took away their 40HP outboard motor engine, a cell phone, wrist-watch and several articles of clothing and escaped.
So far no one has been arrested.
