– Gunshot wound on body
The body of 21-year-old Paul Peters, of East Ruimveldt Front Road, was fished out of the Laing Avenue canal yesterday morning after it surfaced and was observed by residents in the immediate vicinity. The man’s lower back bore a gunshot wound.
Police were contacted and scores of residents converged to get a glimpse of the body, many in an effort to ascertain the individual’s identity. After several hours the body was eventually pulled from the waterway and removed by personnel from the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
Residents recalled that on Sunday night last, they heard gunshots ringing out, and police on motorcycles were hunting someone that they believed had been shot.
“It had fuh be de same man dey find hey, because when dey de shooting dey hit de man that was running and he fall into de canal and didn’t surface until now. It got to be he, because the body surface almost three days later,” one woman recounted.
The man was allegedly part of a gang of three men who police were hunting on Boxing Day, in relation to several robberies in the area. Peters was reportedly cornered and shot in his bid to escape the lawmen.
