– future preparations must be guided by Policy Document
Without a doubt, 2010 could be classified as a successful year for sporting achievements in Guyana.
Many teams and individual athletes managed to hold their own against some of the very best in the Caribbean and it only served to emphasise what many of us have long established that Guyana possess some of the most naturally talented athletes in the Region.
Once again, our rugby players, though a few have incurred the wrath of the governing body recently for indiscipline, produced results that we have grown accustomed to, winning both the Men’s and Ladies NACRA titles, while the Men became the first holders of the CAC crown.
The female football team (Lady Jaguars), though comprised predominantly of players resident overseas became the first representative Ladies team of Guyana to make it to the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers which was held in Mexico, while the Men made it to the final round of the Digicel Cup, all momentous accomplishments for a country that is yet to treat sports as one of the pillars for economic advancement and prosperity.
Next we had the stirring performances from our motor racers who captured the Caribbean Championship following the completion of the three legs that were staged in Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana.
And who could forget the awe-inspiring display of Kevin Jeffrey, who barely lost out on the individual title by a few points to Jamaican David Summerbell Jnr.
Distance running star Cleveland Forde once again proved that no one in the Caribbean could stand next to him after racing to victory in two of the three legs of the South American 10K Road Race.
Perhaps, the performance of all performances this year was the awesome feat of international bodybuilder Hugh Ross, who went on to win the Mr. Universe Masters title in London from 33 other competitors.
Guyana’s Aliann Pompey was promoted to silver in the 400 metres at the Commonwealth Games in India, while the junior Squash teams once again
dominated the Caribbean Circuit.
Our national senior cricketers were crowned champions of the West Indies T20 Tournament affirming our dominance on the regional circuit, though we failed to produce the quality of cricket that was required at the international level.
There are many more instances of our sporting success in 2010, but what we need now to continue the positive trend is a collective vision that incorporates more members of the Private Sector and a more robust commitment from the Government.
As has been stated ion many articles previously, if the preparation is ad hoc and not guided by a Policy Document then the ambitions of our athletes to take it to the next level, especially those that have to train right here, will not be realised.
LISTEN HOW JAGDEO WILL MAKE ALL GUYANESE RICH!!!
