Police in the Rupununi are once again being accused of brutalizing residents. This time 26-year-old miner, Jermaine Springer, sustained severe head injuries which people say resulted from a beating by police officers stationed at Aishalton.
This is the second time in a month that the police in the Rupununi have been fingered in the beating of persons.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that on Tuesday night, Springer, of Tabatinga, emerged from his mining area at Marudi and went to a shop at Aishalton to purchase fuel.
It is alleged that the shop owner who was imbibing with a policeman, was reluctant to sell him and an argument ensued.
The policeman got involved and reportedly struck Springer several times in his head with a full Guinness bottle.
The policeman then ran away towards the Aishalton Police Station with Springer in hot pursuit.
But Springer collapsed at the station door and was rescued by some public spirited persons who had seen what was taking place.
He was taken to the Aishalton Hospital where he was treated but not before photographs of his injuries were taken.
The public spirited persons who assisted the injured man travelled the almost 150 miles to Lethem where they related to his father what had happened.
The police at Lethem were subsequently informed and they left to carry out investigations.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine, when contacted by this newspaper said that he was informed by a gazetted officer at Lethem that he had received a report of an incident in which it was alleged that a man was assaulted by police at Aishalton.
“The officer did indicate to me that he had seen what purports to be photos of an injured man. As a consequence, I have dispatched the officer and two detectives to Aishalton to investigate,” Ramnarine told Kaieteur News.
