Bank DIH executive and Guyanese humanitarian activist, Shabir Hussain, has won this year’s Tikun Olam Award for Humanitarian Aid when the Canadian Jewish Humanitarian organisation, Ve’ahavta, held its Annual Awards Ceremony recently at the Toronto Centre for Performing Arts.
According to a release, Kirill Zoretsky, Director of Development of Ve’ahavta, is quoted as saying that the award was presented to Hussain, an executive of Banks DIH Ltd. and Lions Past Chairman of the Council of Governors, for his continued effort and determination in providing humanitarian assistance to “Repair the World”.
“Mr. Hussain has worked tirelessly over the last 20 years to provide humanitarian aid to those in need through partnerships with Lions International and other organisations. He has facilitated over 30 medical missions to Guyana,” the organisation said.
According to Ve’aharvta, Hussain has partnered with them to provide healthcare to thousands of patients and has made available training opportunities for local interns in Guyana.
The event featured keynote speaker Sir Bob Geldof, internationally acclaimed humanitarian activist.
The Master of Ceremonies was David Shore, creator, writer and executive producer for the award-winning television series, House M.D.
Hussain, in an invited comment, said that he was elated to receive the award and will continue his work to bring relief to those in need.
Ve’ahavta is a Canadian humanitarian and relief organisation that is motivated by the Jewish value of tzedakah – the obligation to do justice – by assisting the needy locally and abroad through volunteerism, education, and acts of kindness, while building bridges between Jews and other peoples, worldwide.
