With a full serving of activities on the platter for this weekend The Port Mourant Turf Club one day Horserace meet slated for today is expected to attract its fair share of the pie. A bumper crowd is expected to throng the venue, a feature that is synonymous with the clubs Pre Christmas Horserace meet. With the venue also having the reputation as one of the leading ones in the country, turfites can look forward to an exciting time.
Seven races have been lined up for the day’s entertainment with a sizable $4M in cash and trophies up for grabs which no doubt will add to the anticipated wallop that is expected to unfold.
A whopping 77 horses have taken entry. Preparations have been completed and all systems are in place and with three major sponsors in Guyana’s leading Beverage Company pacesetters Banks DIH Limited, leading bank Republic Bank Guyana Limited and telephone giants Digicel all on board as a riveting day of racing is in the making.
The most talked about subject on the lips of Turfites today is not who will win the feature B class event, and if the recent dominance by the Crawford and Elcock stables will continue. The two stables have recently been dominating this event with a series of victories.
The Banks DIH sponsored feature B class event with a glittering $500,000 and the Banks DIH trophy up for grabs will be a 1300M affair, which makes it even more interested as a number of sprinters are in line to create an upset. Among the leading entries in this race are Night Crescendo, Tropical Passion, On the Rock with Salt, Star Tracer, Prince Charming and Marathon Man.
A ding dong battle is anticipated in the three year old Guyana and West Indies and Guyana Bred race. Mr. Kris Jagdeo’s Sabrina Princess will be out to prove that it is the top horse in this division, but with Peaceful and Celebration Time, Got to go and Fairy Landing in the running it will have to be at its best.
With the distance being tagged at 1700M and a sizable sum of $400,000 available to the winner the race is an open affair.
Better that Gold also of The Jagdeo stable will be looking to continue its unbeaten gold medal runs since starting its sojourn in Guyana in the two year old category for Horses bred and born in Guyana and West Indies. The 1200M race will see the likes of Pay Day, Irish Girl, Super Cat and Money up Front looking to steal the $300,000 winner’s pie from the hot favourite.
Almost all the animals in the Republic Bank sponsors D and lower 1000M sprint are in with a chance to grab the $300,000 first prize and trophy. And with the likes of Delmur Gold, The Gap, Laura Lee in Flight, Top of The Line and newly imported Gullium and Bwana Dancer in the line up, an interesting race is in the making.
The F class lineup has the likes of Sir Balajee, Romantic Passion, Lady of my dreams, Momzelee, South Sea, Pegasus Rising, Gabrielle Gold and Pixie Fire in the hotly contested event which has a winners take of $240,000 over 1400M.
The ‘I’ class 1300M battle has a full complement of horses with the winner set to run away with $150,000.
Digicel takes charge of the I3 maiden and J class 1000M gallop and with a full box taking entry. The Digicel trophy is at stake along with $120,000 for the pole position.
There will be trophies and other prizes for the top individual performers including Champion Jockey, stable and trainer compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the trophy stall Bourda market.
