Appearing before (Ag) Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry yesterday was Joy Barmell who was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
It is alleged that on April 26, last, Barmell assaulted her landlord, Peter Harvey, at her place of abode. On the day of the incident the defendant told Harvey that someone had stolen her clothes from her line.
Harvey, who was under the influence of alcohol at that time, went to another tenant in the same lot and told the tenant’s son that Barmell complained to him that the boy’s mother had stolen her clothes.
The defendant, who was upset over the situation, stated that although she complained to her landlord about someone stealing her clothes she never implicated anyone in the matter. She then took off her slippers and dealt several lashes to Harvey.
Magistrate Beharry placed the defendant on $40,000 bail, however, Barmell pleaded with the court to reduce the sum since she was unemployed.
The Magistrate granted her request and reduced bail to the sum of $5,000.
