Dear Editor,
I am not surprised that the Kaieteur News has become Guyana’s leading newspaper under the leadership of Glenn Lall.
Neither I am surprised of the stance on many controversial issues that the newspaper has taken, especially in the face of the attacks on its columnist Freddie Kissoon and the newspaper itself, all of which I follow with great interest on the internet.
I am a native of Wakenaam, the same island the publisher, Glenn Lall, grew up. I have known Glenn since we were toddlers, all the way up to secondary school, the St. Paul’s Anglican School in the village of Zeelandia.
All through the time I knew him he was always someone who, no matter what, would stand up for what he believes in.
This is not to say that he challenged authority, however, he often did not allow authority to ride him.
One incident stood out during our school days that pointed to the nature of his character from an early age.
The Headmaster Mr. Surujnauth had singled out Glenn for admonishment in front of the entire class.
Glenn was standing behind Mr. Surujnauth, who was speaking to us about something that Glenn was alleged to have done.
But obviously Glenn was convinced that he was not guilty so he quietly walked out of the classroom unknown to the Headmaster.
The entire class saw Glenn walk out but did not say a word and it was only until Mr. Surujnauth looked around and did not see Glenn that he realised what had happened.
It was not that we were afraid of Glenn, but Glenn was our leader who on many occasions stood up for the entire school whenever the administration tried to brow beat us.
I cannot recall Glenn being punished for his stance that day, for the Headmaster must have seen the determination in Glenn’s attitude and knew he was wrongfully accused.
Those days have long gone but today Glenn appears to be no different.
As a matter of fact he appears even more determined to confront those who want to trample on the helpless.
So to those who think that they could silence him with their vile threats and withdrawal of advertisements, will do the right thing and think again.
It is not surprising that he has taken a strong position to defend his staff whenever they are facing adversity.
If he could have done it for his classmates as a teenager, he will certainly do more for his staff.
The Kaieteur News will continue to be the champion for the freedom of expression and as long as my Wakenaam buddy is at the helm, this will never change.
