Police in Berbice foiled the Christmas plans of three bandits who invaded the home of a Corentyne family on Tuesday night, robbing them of cash and jewellery as well as other items.
The men were nabbed in a route 63 minibus as they were making their getaway a few minutes after the attack.
They had robbed 48-year-old Chris Shambarran, and his wife Alyiah, and Vadwattie Ramloutan, all of whom are based overseas while they were at their home at Lot 143 Number 0 Village, Corentyne around 20:30 hours.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the overseas based trio was visiting the home of a cousin Mohendra Shambaran and were in the living when three masked men entered through a southern door which was left open.
One of the men who was armed with a gun, pointed it at the victims while his two accomplices who were carrying knives began beating them, demanding cash and jewellery in the process.
The victims complied, handing over a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, a Dell laptop computer and other items.
The bandits then locked their victims in a bedroom before making good their escape.
The victims, however, managed to free themselves and immediately contacted the police.
As a result of information received police stopped a route 63 minibus BHH 776 on the Number 43 Public Road, Corentyne.
In it were Simon Vanderstoop called ‘Pum’, 23, of Skeldon; Quamie Bhajwandin, 28 of Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam and 30-year-old Ray Mc Andrew, a chauffeur of Lot 14 Dukestown, Corriverton.
A search was carried out on the men and in the minibus and a quantity of gold jewellery, one Dell Laptop Computer, one black leather wallet containing documents in the name of Chris Shambaran and $2,640 in cash were found.
The three suspects were arrested and the items lodged.
Police sources said that they are looking for two others who may be able to assist in further investigations.
One of the victims reported that he has been returning to Guyana over the past few years and would normally feed orphans at a Berbice orphanage.
He said that at the time of the robbery they were preparing the meals to take to the orphanage yesterday.
He was loud in praise for the swift action of the police, since he had barely begun to report the matter at the police station when ranks arrived with the suspect whom they readily recognized.
This recent robbery highlights a frightening trend that points to bandits targeting overseas-based visitors.
