The Covent Garden Secondary School continues to benefit from the generosity of its past students. In recognition of their dedication to duty and service to their students, the teaching staff of the school was treated to a scrumptious lunch on November 18, compliments of the members of the New York Chapter of the Past Students Association.
On November 19, the 2010 graduation exercise was held in the school’s auditorium. A number of students were awarded for their outstanding performance in the 2010 CSEC examinations.
Valedictorian was Joel Johnson who is now pursuing studies at the University of Guyana.
Mrs. Lorraine Parvatan, a past student of the school and also a vibrant member of the New York Chapter of the Past Students’ Association, traveled to Guyana to attend the graduation exercise.
She arrived bearing gifts that included partial scholarships for valedictorian Joel Johnson, Aaron Raghunath, Lyndia Collins and Marcelle David, all compliments of the New York Chapter. Mrs. Parvatan was also the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony.
Additionally, the school received a cot (for first aid training) and a six-burner gas cooker for its Home Economics Department.
Julie Duncan received an office chair. These were made possible compliments of Mrs Kunchbeharry and Professor Ramdass – a brother and sister team and both former teachers of the CGSS.
Professor Ramdass now lectures at the Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
The graduation exercise was chaired by Kim DeFreitas, Human Resources Manager (Ag) – Guysuco and former broadcaster. He too was a past student of the school. There were also representatives of classes of ’69, ’79, ’89 and 1999.
The gifts were presented by Avahnelle Hammond-Sam, representative of the local chapter.
