Action in the Dr. Noel Blackman birthday knockout 7-a-side football tournament will kick off on Thursday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground Bourda with a total eight matches starting at 5:00pm.
The tournament coordinated by Former national player and coach, Lennox Arthur, is in honour of the birth anniversary of another former footballer, Dr. Noel Blackman, who was also a Minister of Health during the People’s National Congress (PNC) led administration several years ago.
The eventual winner will walk away with $100,000 and the runner-up $50,000 along with trophies. Thirty-two area and street teams have been invited to participate and test their mettle with the ultimate goal of collecting the ‘hundred grand’ on offer.
Several of the leading area teams and players will be in action over four days of competition fixed for Thursday December 9, Saturday 11, Tuesday 14 and Sunday 19 when the quarterfinals, semis and final will be contested.
The no offside rule will be in effect for this tournament and several exciting players including Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Solomon Austin, Sceyon Hope and Stellon David among others will be on show in the opening salvo.
Opening action pits Sophia vs Festival City, West back Road vs Laing Avenue, Tiger Bay vs Lima Dam, North East La Penitence vs Middle Road, West Ruimveldt vs Vryheid’s Lust, West Estate vs Cummings Lodge, Mocha vs Bel Air Park and North Ruimveldt vs Tucville.
