– Ladies final on today
Former junior standout Jeremy Miller produced a remarkable performance to win the Pegasus Open Tennis Singles crown from defending champion Phillip Squires on Thursday evening, at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
Miller, who took the lead in the match after claiming the first set 6-3, recovered from 2-5 down in the second stanza, reeling off five straight games in the process to become the new national champion in his second year in the seniors.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the win, Miller said his feelings are mixed, citing his inability to properly prepare due to the rains which evidently affected his game.
“It feels great to win the title, but I don’t think I am completely satisfied with my performance. I was a bit inconsistent, but nevertheless I came through and that is what mattered,” Miller told this newspaper.
He disclosed that the difference in his play this year is that he is more focused and patient unlike other times when he committed more errors due to his impatience.
The 19 year-old Miller said he hope that this win is the start of a long reign at the top. Squires on the other hand looked a shadow of the usually confident player that all have come to know and seemed incapable of handling the big serves and heavy side spin forehands of the younger and vastly improved Miller and easily succumbed in the opening set after being broken twice.
The second stanza followed a similar pattern as the first with Squires breaking Miller in the third game to go 2-1 up.
That was the last hurrah for him as Miller begun to execute some thunderous first serves and that was backed up by some blistering forehand winners interspersed with a few deft drop volleys that Squires had no answer for and meekly folded to relinquish his title and reign on the lien trophy.
Squires had no excuses for his display, pointing out that Miller was the better player on the day and nothing else.
The Ladies final is set for today between Carol Humphrey and Krystal Sukra.
