…donates $400,000 worth in items to seven primary schools
The East Canje organization of New York, a group made up of former residents of East Canje now living in the United States of America recently made a donation to their alma mater.
The group, through a representative, donated more than $400,000 worth of donations of various kinds to the primary schools in the East Canje district.
This activity was held recently in the hall way of the Rose Hall Estate Primary School. It was chaired by Reverend Dr Paul Moonu, Parish priest of the Lutheran Church, a resident of the area and a former school teacher. The activity was coordinated by businessman Robin Sookraj of R. Sookraj and Sons, and retired head mistress Ms Bassant, both residents of the area. They had also helped to acquire the items.
The seven schools, namely Zorg (New Forest), Gangaram, Betsy Ground, Rose Hall Estate, Cumberland, Fort Ordnance and Sheet Anchor Primary Schools were given a significant boost in the quest to make their school and environment more conducive to learning.
The schools were asked a little while ago to identify some items that they needed to make the school and children better. They were also given a chance to identify a project they would want to undertake.
After some consultations a list was drawn up and forwarded to the overseas-based group for action.
Zorg Primary received more than $40,000 worth of items including Spray cans, blackboard paint, curtains, fans and sporting equipment. Gangaram Primary had requested a seasaw worth $70,000 for the playground. The committee donated $55,000 while the school contributed $15,000. The seasaw is being assembled at the moment.
Betsy Ground Primary is about to start a feeding programme. The school received pots, plates, hotplates, buckets, a water dispenser and fans for such a programme at a cost of $60,000.
The Rose Hall Estate Primary School was the recipient of various items worth $55,000 including wares, cutleries and books.
Cumberland Primary got a new public address system worth $125,000. The committee donated $60,000 while a group of overseas-based wellwishers donated the remaining $65,000.
