Guyana continues to phase out CFCs

Yesterday morning saw the launching of the “Code of Good Practices Manual for Refrigeration Servicing” at the Ministry of Agriculture’s boardroom.
Minister Robert Persaud opined that the project made more progress because the Ministry was able to work along with stakeholders to build their capacity and make them more compliant.
He acknowledged that with the new manual, this country will be contributing to climate change in a positive manner. Guyana, he pointed out, is a compliant country that does not utilize chemical substances which will damage the ozone, and he added that the capacity is being built at the level where technicians are also being trained.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been employed for a variety of uses, including refrigerants and air conditioning fluids, aerosols, propellants, solvents and foam-blowing agents. and it was discovered in the 1980s that the ozone layer was vulnerable to damage by CFCs and other industrial chemicals.
The manual covers a large range of topics which include the availability of low Global Warming Potential (GWP) alternatives in refrigeration: options for near and longer term transitions, effective interpersonal communication, key elements to better understanding and analyzing perceptions and pathways analysis and active listening.
Guyana became party to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer on August 12, 1993.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, due to the fact that Guyana neither exports nor manufactures these products, the extent of Guyana’s uses is confined to importation, generally consumed in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.
In an effort to achieve the targeted reductions in Ozone Depleting Substances as mandated by the Montreal Protocol, there has been training and the provision of complementary agencies in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.
The Code of Good Practice Manual for Refrigeration Servicing is also aimed at complementing these developments.
According to the Agriculture Minister, when the project commenced, some persons thought that it would result in burdens being imposed, however; many persons who were involved in it over the past months have ensured that with proper finances and other forms of assistance, the project was completed successfully.
